History Notes
October 25, 1959
- Chapel Hill Methodist (CHMC) youth meet to form MYF.
The met at 6:30pm in the Tischer Home on Damascus Way in
Farmers Branch.
October 31, 1959 - CHMC's
financial report for July - October: $818.15 total
collections; $671.69 total disbursements; $146.46 balance!
Fall 1959 - CHMC has 50
members.
November 5, 1959 - First
choir practice session in the home of Frances Lindley.
November 22, 1959 - CHMC
becomes fully recognized established church. A Service
of Constitution is held. Rev. Dr. T. Lee Miller, District
Superintendent, preached the morning worship service.
There were 80 charter members at this time and 132 present
for the service. CHMC Choir sings at this service for
the first time.
November 30, 1959 - Woman's
Society of Christian Service is organized. 14 women
are present. Jane Kostiuk served as first president.
December 6 1959 - First
Pledge Sunday. Budget for the first six months of 1960
was $4,160.
January 24, 1960 - Family
Night dinner held. Building committee named and
building plans were discussed following the dinner.
Fall 1960 - CHMC has 199
members.
Fall 1962
- CHMC has 400 members.
November 17, 1962 - CHMC's
first BBQ (the first of many tasty events!).
December 22, 1963 -
Christmas Candlelight service held - thought to be the first
at CHMC.
February 21 - 24, 1965 -
Dr. Robert E. Goodrich, Jr. pastor of First Methodist
Church, Dallas holds a revival at CHMC.
October 1 1967
- Our first pastor, Rev. Robert E Langley's last Sunday at
CHMC after 8 1/2 years. He was re-appointed by the
Bishop to another Dallas Area church.
January 1966
- Portraits taken for first Pictorial Directory!
February 1966
- Woman's Society of Christian Service and
Commission on Worship establish a memorial fund to purchase
Methodist Hymnals and another memorial fund to purchase a
new organ.
February 13, 1966
- Our current Adult Education Director, Sherry Vinyard and
husband Jim join CHMC. Their children attend
confirmation classes that year and become fully recognized
members.
1968 -
UNITED Methodist Church is formed - Chapel Hill Methodist
becomes Chapel Hill United Methodist.
January -
February 1968 - Second parsonage on Rosser Road
in Dallas is purchased. Rev. Reed and his family moved
in first week of February. Open house and consecration
service lead by DS Harvey on February 11.
Fall 1969
- CHUMC has over 1,000 members.
January 7, 1973
- Rev. David Shawver preached his first sermon at CHUMC -
the third pastor to serve.
December 10, 1977
- First Children's Christmas Workshop held. Children
made gifts for family members on Saturday morning. The
tradition continues today but has moved to Wednesday night
as part of WOW.
November 18, 1979 - First
Thanksgiving Feast held. November 23, 2008 marked the
29th feast!
