Congratulations Confirmands!

Congratulations and welcome to our newest members from the 2012 Confirmation Class!

Each of these young Christians bring gifts and graces to our body of Christ at Chapel Hill.

Riley Dobbs brings the gift of curiosity and encouragement and joy.

Brayson Hansen brings the gift of energy and leadership and love.

Isaac Self brings the gift of thoughtfulness and certitude and persistence.

Harper Steyer brings the gift of the spirit of calmness and gentleness and understanding.

Jackson Steyer brings the gift of perception and deep thought and kindness and patience.

Jack Tolle brings the gift of creativity and compassion and intuitiveness.

Alex Young brings the gift of sensitivity to others and faithfulness and gentleness.

What a gift of blessings we receive!

It may seem like graduation from Confirmation Class to these new confirmands, but it is just the beginning of a new life in Christ with the companionship of every member of the congregation walking beside them to support and love them in every event of their young lives.

We Welcome Our New Members

Sunday, May 20th was indeed a “bringing in the sheaves” Sunday!

We are happy to extend the right hand of Christian fellowship to Heidi and Rob Tolle and their children; Rachel and Hannah and Jack. Heidi is our Youth Director and Rob and Rachel sing in the Chancel Choir. Hannah shared her talent with directing musicals as she helped Kathy Guttierrez with the Two by Two Zoo Review presentation May 13th.

Of the Confirmands, we welcome Riley Dobbs, Brayson Hansen, Isaac Self, Harper Steyer, Jack Tolle, and Alex Young into the disciples of Chapel Hill UMC.

We also extend a warm welcome to Sharon Young, who confessed her faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized and became a disciple to make disciples at Chapel Hill UMC.

We give all the glory to God and watch expectantly to see how God will do mighty things in these his newest servants and followers. Thanks be to God!

Another Graduation To Celebrate!

Hello church family!

I wanted to let you know that Keiaira Hicks, my dear “Little Sister” that I have been matched with for 11 years now in the Big Brother/Big Sister program, is graduating June 1st from DeSoto High School! Since so many of you know Keiaira, it was suggested to me that I share this information.

I have known Keiaira since she was an adorable 7-year-old, and she has grown into a beautiful, determined young woman with a bright future ahead of her.

Thank you for embracing Keiaira over the years -- at church, at VBS, and at the many events she has participated in at Chapel Hill. She is graduating with her 1,500-hour cosmetology license and her goal is to work for Toni & Guy Salons, go to college, and perhaps own a salon some day (we have visited Toni & Guy and they are very impressed with her!).

CALLING ALL READING VOLUNTEERS!!!

Project Transformation starts June 4, 2012, and continues Mondays through Thursdays until July 25. Chapel Hill UMC has adopted the first week, June 4th – 7th. As a volunteer, you will get to listen to children read to you from a story book.

Reading time is 10:00 – 11:30 am. All volunteers will need to come the first time at 9:30am for orientation.

Please complete a background check form (located on the table outside the church office) with all the information requested, so Jennifer can get clearance on each volunteer before the children arrive. Yes, you have to do that every year!

Since we will have 80 elementary children, we would like to have 20-30 volunteers each day during our week. Everyone registered is welcome to participate throughout the summer program. Usually, they need extra reading listeners each day.

Thank you to the Sunday School classes that volunteered to teach the Elementary class this summer!

We do still need a few volunteers for the younger class. During this class you get to play outside! We really appreciate all those that step up to teach and learn with the children during the summer.

Youth Notes - May 22, 2012

Congratulations to all of our wonderful Confirmands!

This Sunday, our older youth finished up their study of Ecclesiastes. We appreciated how down to earth the author was in expressing throughout this book the same angst that modern teenagers (and adults) suffer.

Throughout, he questions the meaning of life, rails at the unfairness and injustice of in the world, and lashes out at fools. Ultimately, he concludes that people behave very foolishly and the ways of the world don't make sense...but our hope lies in constantly seeking the nature of God and grasping tightly to the wisdom that comes from walking in God's ways.

We are reminded that time is a gift and we should spend our days wisely, seeking God, working hard, and savoring the goodness we come across."

We DESPERATELY needs ADULT VOLUNTEERS in order to comply with Safe Sanctuary practices.

Please contact Heidi if you can share one Sunday (4-6 PM) in June or July with UMYF.

Duties are minimal; we just need a second adult in the room. It is more fun for the kids if this person is not their parent, so congregation adults, step forward!

UMYF SNACKS needed!

This can be as simple as dropping off cookies and fruit or chips and salsa, etc. on a Sunday morning! Please sign up at the Hall Table.

May M.O.P. - UMCOR Health Kits

The monthly outreach project for May is to gather much needed supplies to make UMCOR health kits. We contacted UMCOR and they are in desperate need of the items for health kits.

Hand Towels 15” x 25” to 1” x 27” (Kitchen cleaning and microfiber towels are not acceptable)
Washcloths
Cobs (no pocket combs or picks)
Metal Nail files or clippers (no emery boards please)
Bath size hand soaps
Adhesive bandages 3⁄4” to 1” size – common household Band-Aids
One Gallon sealable plastic bags
$1.00 to purchase toothpaste (UMCOR gets a special discount for purchasing in bulk)

Please bring your supplies and place them in the hallway bin starting the fourth week of May. We will take supplies until Sunday, June 10th!

MOMS of PRESCHOOLERS...are you and your friends ready for a little "Mom Time"? M.O.P.S meetings are a child-free oasis where you can escape for a few hours of fun, ideas, encouragement, and friendship.

MOMS of ANY AGE...if you are interested in being involved as a nursery volunteer, presentation speaker, craft leader, or member of a planning committee for a CHUMC chartered Mothers of Preschoolers (M.O.P.S) group, please contact Dawn or Heidi by email or phone.

Reading Is Fundamental

Reading Is Fun!

Do you enjoy reading and meeting new people? Here’s an opportunity for both!

Volunteers are needed to read with the children at Cabell Elementary School. This is especially important this time of year - reinforcing good reading habits before Summer vacation! The children need lots of encouragement in their reading.

If you would like to join in reading with the children just let us know when you’re available and we’ll get you signed-up!

Labors for Neighbors is looking for a Few Good Missioners!

They'll be heading up to Cache, Oklahoma the weekend of June 1-3. We aren't organizing as a CHUMC group this time, but if you are available and open to an awesome experience please contact Cleve Clinton, 214-537-6967, to save your space on the bus!

Spend Saturday just a little closer to God - up on a roof! Bus leaves Friday evening, dinner is served along with prayer and meditations on service and mission. Saturday - prayer, meditations and work! Sunday more prayer! Then head home in your L4N Tee, stopping along the way to share worship with a Methodist congregation. Home by mid afternoon.

Cost is $95. If the only thing stopping you is that number, talk to Kelly, a way will be made!!

Music Notes - May 16, 2012

The Youth Choir from First UMC - Allen, will be at our church Saturday, May 19 at 6:30pm to present this delightful musical written by Rev. JoNell's husband.

The musical tells how the Israelites left Egypt and their journey back to Jerusalem. Oh, did I mention that this musical takes place in the WESTERN part of Egypt, it kinda looked like San Antonio in the old cowboy days.

You may remember this choir; they presented Godspell last May at our church. Anyway, I have had the opportunity to watch them in rehearsals and I know you are going to like this presentation of the old West.

So plan now to see and learn about Moses leading his people out of Egypt to the Promised Land.

Sunday May 20th at the 10:30 Worship Experience

For many of us confirmation is the first public profession of the faith into which we are baptized, the Christian faith. Our confirmands have decided to claim the name for themselves. The confirmation service is a time to proclaim the name of Christ in the company of those who are part of their confirmation studies and experience; to the persons who have loved them enough to want them to know God’s love and to the whole community of faith, who pray for them and who will continue to support and walk with them in the journey ahead.

Celebration is at the heart of being Christian. We are to live joyously, confirmed, and made strong with the assurance of God’s great love for us. That’s something wonderful to celebrate. John Wesley’s advice for Christian living; Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can!

Congratulations Graduates!

Chapel Hill is proud to give a standing ovation to Scott Randall and Kathryn (Katie) Newsome.

Scott has earned a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Finance from Southern Methodist University.

Katie Newsome has also graduated with honors from Southern Methodist University and will attend Perkins School of Divinity in the fall to continue on her path to ordained ministry in the United Methodist Church.

We pray God’s richest blessings on you both as you walk with Christ into your new life. We look forward to seeing you in worship.
