We Worship   We Study   We Fellowship   We Pray   We Serve

A Short History of CHUMC

The Beginnings
In the spring of 1959 the North Texas Conference appointed Robert Langley to establish a new church.  The first church service was held at Cabell Elementary on July 12, 1959.

By the end of 1959, there were 97 Charter members.  The name, Chapel Hill, was chosen as the five acres set aside for the church was located in the Chapel Hill addition in Farmers Branch.

The congregation continued to meet at Cabell Elementary for two years with members transporting chairs, communion rails, etc. from their garages to the school each Sunday.

A Building To Meet In
The Church Building was designed by xx (you can see a drawing by the architects in the conference room) and planned to be built in phases.

The first phase was completed in October 1961.  The first service in the building was held on October 29.  The second and third phases were completed in 1963 and 1966 adding classrooms and offices.

The Family Grows
From a first service with 16 in attendance to 97 charter members by the end of 1959 five months later, Chapel Hill continued to grow drawing families from the new developments being built in the immediate area.

By 1968 the family had grown to over 1000 members.  In 1970 the Fellowship Hall and more classrooms were added to accommodate the growing church family.

The addition of I-635 in 19xx essentially split what was a contiguous community spanning the Dallas/Farmers Branch border in two and isolated Chapel Hill UMC.

A Tradition Continues
The Chapel Hill family of today is somewhat smaller than in the 1970s and now draws members from all over the metroplex.   However, we  continue the tradition of caring and outreach started almost 50 years ago.

We help to support missionaries as far away as Cameroon & xx;  we support the North Texas Food Bank and other Dallas area; we maintain a close alliance with Cabell Elementary working to help students there pass the TAKS tests.

We are proud to be a part of Perkins School of Theology's pastor intern program, working together to grow effective pastors.

We are also a close knit family, growing together, supporting each other.  Come and experience it!  Welcome Home!

Who We Are

Like Joseph's coat of many colors, we come from many different backgrounds and heritages.  We are a community joined by our belief in Jesus Christ who share our joys and concerns with each other as we make our way thorough this world.

Our Mission

Our mission is to glorify God as Lord by reaching out and making disciples for Jesus Christ.

Our Vision

Guided by Christ-centered confidence, passion and dedication, we pray for the Holy Spirit to so ignite us that together we will surpass even our own dreams. With faithfulness we will recognize and use our many spiritual gifts. With enthusiasm we will grow physically and spiritually. With love we will expand our outreach. With diligence we will broaden our mission ministry. With excitement and joy we will teach God's word.

Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Our Value

With humility and integrity, we...

  • submit ourselves and all our actions to God's will.          (Proverbs 3:5-6)
  • emphasize God's unconditional love, acceptance and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. (John 3:16)
  • minister to a diverse community so that all can come to know Christ and develop a close relationship with God.              (Romans 1:14-15)
  • promote spiritual growth through indepth Bible study and small group ministries that encourage believers to discover and exercise their spiritual gifts. (II Timothy 3:16-17)
  • provide a place for people to put their faith into action through prayer, worship and Christ-centered service. (Colossians 1:9-10)
  • develop and nurture meaningful Christian relationships by emphasizing fellowship as a means for reaching out to our community. (Philippians 2:1-4)
  • encourage unity, mutual respect and cooperation by obeying Christ's commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves.           (I Peter 3:8)
