CALLING ALL READING VOLUNTEERS!!!

Project Transformation starts June 4, 2012, and continues Mondays through Thursdays until July 25. Chapel Hill UMC has adopted the first week, June 4th – 7th. As a volunteer, you will get to listen to children read to you from a story book.

Reading time is 10:00 – 11:30 am. All volunteers will need to come the first time at 9:30am for orientation.

Please complete a background check form (located on the table outside the church office) with all the information requested, so Jennifer can get clearance on each volunteer before the children arrive. Yes, you have to do that every year! 

Since we will have 80 elementary children, we would like to have 20-30 volunteers each day during our week. Everyone registered is welcome to participate throughout the summer program. Usually, they need extra reading listeners each day.

Thank you to the Sunday School classes that volunteered to teach the Elementary class this summer!

We do still need a few volunteers for the younger class. During this class you get to play outside! We really appreciate all those that step up to teach and learn with the children during the summer. 

We know that you are enriched by the experience along with the children.

Congratulations to all of our wonderful Confirmands!

This Sunday, our older youth finished up their study of Ecclesiastes. We appreciated how down to earth the author was in expressing throughout this book the same angst that modern teenagers (and adults) suffer. 

Throughout, he questions the meaning of life, rails at the unfairness and injustice of in the world, and lashes out at fools. Ultimately, he concludes that people behave very foolishly and the ways of the world don't make sense...but our hope lies in constantly seeking the nature of God and grasping tightly to the wisdom that comes from walking in God's ways. 

We are reminded that time is a gift and we should spend our days wisely, seeking God, working hard, and savoring the goodness we come across."

We DESPERATELY needs ADULT VOLUNTEERS in order to comply with Safe Sanctuary practices.

Please contact Heidi if you can share one Sunday (4-6 PM) in June or July with UMYF. 

Duties are minimal; we just need a second adult in the room. It is more fun for the kids if this person is not their parent, so congregation adults, step forward!

UMYF SNACKS needed!

This can be as simple as dropping off cookies and fruit or chips and salsa, etc. on a Sunday morning! Please sign up at the Hall Table.

The Youth enjoyed learning new skills from adults in our congregation; now they'd like a chance to share their expertise with the adults!

Reading Is Fun!

Do you enjoy reading and meeting new people? Here’s an opportunity for both!

Volunteers are needed to read with the children at Cabell Elementary School. This is especially important this time of year - reinforcing good reading habits before Summer vacation! The children need lots of encouragement in their reading.

If you would like to join in reading with the children just let us know when you’re available and we’ll get you signed-up!

The Youth Choir from First UMC - Allen, will be at our church Saturday, May 19 at 6:30pm to present this delightful musical written by Rev. JoNell's husband.

The musical tells how the Israelites left Egypt and their journey back to Jerusalem. Oh, did I mention that this musical takes place in the WESTERN part of Egypt, it kinda looked like San Antonio in the old cowboy days.

You may remember this choir; they presented Godspell last May at our church. Anyway, I have had the opportunity to watch them in rehearsals and I know you are going to like this presentation of the old West.

So plan now to see and learn about Moses leading his people out of Egypt to the Promised Land.

Your Youth Director is desperately seeking adult volunteers to fill a rotating schedule. To comply with safe practices, we must always have two adults with the youth group! You would be on-duty from 4-6 pm on your selected date. 

Mostly, you would serve as a second set of eyes for Heidi. Other "duties" depend on your ability and comfort level...perhaps setting up items for an activity, supervising a few kids playing catch outdoors, monitoring the free play in the youth room, or serving/cleaning up snacks. Please contact Heidi ASAP.

We need adults on board right away.

At this point we still need books for Prekindergarten through Second Grade. There is a basket in the Conference Room waiting for books!

The Outreach Team has been busy gathering books and activities for our Cabell Elementary Summer (Reading) Sacks. Our Youth, along with Ms. Heidi and Ms. Iris will be making bookmarks, lots and lots of bookmarks to go with the 2nd through 5th grade books.  

The Outreach Team has a container just inside the door of the Conference Room for children’s books and a separate container for the stickers, stamps and bookmarks. Please bring stickers and stamps that we get in the mail with our return address labels and any other (free) stickers.

We will assemble the Cabell Summer Sacks at our May 20 Potluck Lunch!

At this point we still need books for Pre-kindergarten through Second Grade.

Project Transformation

Project Transformation (PT) Registration is going very well. Thanks to all of our volunteers and those who have given money and prayers for the program. If you would like to volunteer as a reader this summer, please stop by the main office to turn in your background check form. (Forms are located on the table outside the church office.)

We are reading the first week of PT!

Plan to come June 4th – 7th to read. You are welcome to talk to the site coordinator about volunteering throughout the summer if you just can’t get enough.

Sunday School Class

Jimmy and Dawn are ready to sign up your adult Sunday School class to teach the Elementary class this summer. We also need a few dedicated volunteers to teach the younger Sunday School class during the summer. All curriculum is provided for you. This gives the regular teachers a much needed and well deserved break.

The new volunteer list for Message Experience is up on the bulletin board, stop by to sign up.

Hello Congregation!

This week at UMYF, the kids recalled a favorite Old Testament story, David and Goliath. We discussed the "Goliaths" that we face in our own lives: school bullies, academic tests, trouble with friends or family members, grandparents with long-term illness. 

These are things that make us feel small and powerless. But Philippians 4:13 reminds us to have courage, because we can "do all things through Christ who strengthens us"! Just like the stones David put in his sling to slay the giant, we have the strength passed to us by Christ's sacrifice. We can also pray and ask God to give his strength to our friends and family who are struggling with something.

To illustrate the increased power over fear that Christ brings to our lives, we did a science experiment outdoors. Small holes were drilled into caps of 2 liter diet coke bottles. Then we lowered a strand of Mentos mints (our 5 small stones) into the diet coke. The result was a gusher of diet coke that shot fifteen feet or more into the air!

Turns out that Mentos mints have lots of tiny pores that serve as "nucleation sites" where many, many bubbles can be released when the candy comes into contact with the soda. The chemical "gum arabic" in the Mentos, and the chemicals "aspartame and potassium benzoate" in the diet Coke speed up the release of the carbon dioxide bubbles by reducing surface tension in the mixture. The result is an incredible, powerful explosion, much like the surge of courage that prayer can bring into our lives!

Saturday, May 5, from 1-3 p.m. we need ALL HANDS ON DECK! Please plan to join us in the fellowship hall to decorate bookmarks for Cabell Elementary Summer Sacks! We have 500 bookmarks to prepare! WE NEED YOU!! It will be lots of fun, and we will provide snacks for you!
