By the time you read this, we are almost midway through the Holy Week, during which the passion narratives of our Lord are played out. It is the story of betrayal, rejection, defeat, torturing, suffering, and death. The narrative of our Lord’s passion is central to our faith; not Christmas, not Ascension of the Lord, and not any other narratives.
Holy Week is a time to reflect on the sacrifice of Christ. The church has given us a week of our Lord’s passion that we can live with him through that passion. Like Peter, James, and John, our Lord invites us to be with him through the difficulties of this week and to pray with him. Like the first Disciples who had gone before us, our Lord wants us to pray; so that we can resist the temptations that we experience in every day of our lives.
I encourage you to continue your Lenten discipline and devotion during Holy Week. At the same time I ask that you take part in worships during this week.
Maundy Thursday – Fellowship Meal and Holy Communion – April 17 at 7:00 p.m.
At this special Maundy Thursday meal, we’ll meet in the Fellowship Hall for a light meal. We will have a “Foot Washing” ritual for our Confirmation Youth and one Children Sunday School teacher, Scripture reading, and we will conclude our time with Holy Communion to remember the meal Jesus and the Disciples had in the Upper Room.
Good Friday Service – April 18 at 7:30 p.m.
In the Good Friday Service, we will meditate on the Passion of Christ. Fourteen readers will take us through the story of the Passion as the light gradually leaves the world and we end the service in darkness.
I hope you come. Together, and by the Holy Spirit, we may share with Christ in the hour of darkness, defeat, shame, and humiliation. And as promised, if we share with him in his defeat, we will also share with him his glory when Easter morning comes.
