October 10, 2014: Note from Pastor Mai

Pastor Mai

Our Mission

While there is one mission – to make disciples of Jesus Christ – what we do as a congregation to be successful in this mission is different from other congregations. The difference comes from God’s gifts and grace to our church.

For a number of months now, I have mentioned the extended formation of the Strategic Planning team at Chapel Hill. This team will help lead and guide the congregation to discern God’s will for the church in the work of ministry for the next 2 to 5 years.

In other words, this team will work with the congregation and lead us to listen deeply for the guidance and call of God for Chapel Hill to determine:

  1. Who are we

  2. Who are our neighbors

  3. What is God’s will for Chapel Hill at this moment in time.

I must emphasize, however, that while the Strategic Planning Team will enable and facilitate our steps, the entire congregation needs to be involved in the process in order for this work to be successful. Your role as both a Chapel Hill member and a member of the body of Christ is crucial in this “Holy Conversation” that will lead our church to discover the biblical story that God wills us to live out. In other words, this process will help us answer the question, “What difference is God calling us to make and are we currently living it out?”

How does this work, you ask?

The members of the Strategic Planning team will report their findings on a regular basis through different mechanisms such as writing articles in the newsletter, making phone calls, and face-to-face by reporting and asking for information through our Sunday classes, committees, choir, and small groups. They will work side by side with you to answer questions such as:

  • In our church, neighborhood, or greater community, what are the greatest needs?

  • How is God calling our congregation to be in a ministry of service and witness where we are?

  • What are the characteristics, traits, and actions that identify people as a faithful disciples?

  • What is our calling and how does it tie in with our neighbors?

As this team guides you through answering these questions, it is imperative that we all work together and work out loud – this is not a closed committee but one in which we are all encouraged to get involved.

I’m very excited about the future of Chapel Hill and I hope you see with me the hands of God at work. Please pray with me for this important part of ministry and our journey together. If you have questions about this, please come by and talk to me.
