Over the last few weeks, an interesting debate has flourished in the public domain. This debate has centered around the question of who, in the USA, may or may not be above the law. Of course the debate involves civil law, the rule of law, and the US Constitution. The key question is whether or not any person or office in the USA can be considered, above the law. I believe the US Constitution is clear on this point. No one, or no office, in the USA is above the law.
This debate in the public arena has caused me to reflect on a similar question in the domain of Christendom. Is there anyone, or anything, that is beyond the law within our Christian beliefs? Of course, since I pose this question from the perspective of Christianity, the law in question is not the US Constitution, but rather the Mosaic Law, or Levitical laws.
This sermon series will seek to explore this question of who, or what might be beyond the law from the perspective of Christian beliefs. It is my hope that this series will cause us to better understand our relationship to the Law, against the backdrop of the new covenant. And perhaps, we may also be able to better understand the implications of the answer to the question currently being debated in the public domain.
