Disney has released a new show in the streaming universe called the Mandalorian. In an episode of the show, the Mandalorian is suspicious of a droid that once attempted to kill a child he protects. A friend named Kuill who the Mandalorian has asked to keep the child for a time reprogrammed the droid to help care for the child, but the Mandalorian still does not trust the droid. Kuill insists the droid killed because he was programmed to do so. Now the droid is reprogrammed, so he will no longer seek to do harm.
We are all programmed. It is just a matter of how. We know that while we are made in the beautiful image of God we are marred by sin. The good news is we are offered a new program rooted in God’s love for all. Since we are not droids, we get to choose which program by which we operate.
In 2020, we will face numerous challenges. A potential church schism. A guaranteed contentious election full of spite and propaganda amidst our cultural divide that causes great suffering to the vulnerable among us. A potential war. Who knows what else.
In the midst of these threats one question is posed to us: which program will we choose.
Grace and peace,
Rev. J.D. Allen
