One of the first things the book of Genesis says is that out of chaos, out of the depths, God created all life. The depths out of which creation sprung represent destruction and depth. The rushing waters smothering all life. Consider the brilliant irony that out of that came life, order, peace, and hope. The creation story is a word of hope to the Jewish people who had lost everything, including their identity. It was assurance.
Our lives today seem like the depths. Pandemic. Political strife. Riots and insurrections. Disinformation. Gun violence. Violent rhetoric. The loss of loved ones. The decline of health. Sagging church participation. Yet just think. God can and will bring something new out of this. The chaos will give way to order. Death will give way to life. God’s love will take hold in new ways in and around us renewing community wherever we look.
This is good news.
Grace and peace,
Rev. J.D. Allen
