Psalm 7, as we discussed in worship yesterday, presents us with a poetic approach to understanding and celebrating the God who is with us and delivers when we are in trouble: the God who is by our side.
“O Lord my God, in you I take refuge;
save me from all my pursuers, and deliver me.”
Mother’s Day was also yesterday. The care we receive from our biological or adoptive mothers, or anyone who serves as a motherly influence in our lives, points us to the love of God. When we find ourselves under great stress, especially unjust stress, we often turn to our mothers. In their arms we find refuge and they will do anything to deliver us from our trouble if they are able. Their love is unconditional, much like the God of the everlasting covenant.
Mother’s Day has passed, but our mothers stand by us offering refuge and love. Take time once again this week to thank anyone who plays that mothering role in your life for their unconditional love and how it points you to the love of God.
Grace and peace,
Rev. J.D. Allen
