Remembering the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Chapel Hill UMCIt is Monday, January 16, 2012, as I write and today is the day that has been set aside to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his powerful efforts to bring social justice and peace to the world. Instead of a nice “day off” on this national holiday, we should be in action to stir up the promotion of peace and social justice and perpetuate Dr. King’s dream.

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” Harriet Tubman.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands, in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular; one must take it because it is right.” Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Our Lord Jesus Christ was an activist for promoting the kingdom of God here on the earth. “Love one another with all your heart, your soul, your mind, and your strength, and your neighbor as yourself.” I think that Dr King and our Lord have the same dream.

Let us remember the life and ministry of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with any deeds of social justice and service that God places upon our hearts.

Let’s move past the annual tradition of just repeating his words, but honor him by living Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words; and “really live in a nation where we are not judged by the color of our skin but by the content of our character.”

Go in peace to love and serve your Neighbor

In Christ, Pastor JoNell
