First, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the “shirt-off-your-back” t-shirt drive to help clothe our brothers and sisters in Africa. By donating your old shirts, you were directly participating in our mission! We would also like to give a HUGE thank you to Donna Hoisington, for organizing her Pinpals group and our church members to help cut fabric and ribbon and sew over 217 gorgeous pieces of handmade dresses and jams for the children! At the Pinpals sew-in back in June, they were able to complete over 80 dresses in one day!
In total, we presented over 250 lbs of clothing and dresses to an organization in Xai-Xai, called Arepacho. Arepacho serves the most impoverished people in Mozambique and offer HIV/AIDS seminars and treatments, clothing and food. The representatives from the benefitting organization were ecstatic when we presented them with a table full of dresses, jams and t-shirts! The translator told us that they remarked at how beautiful the dresses were and how beneficial they would be to those in the most need. We saw lots of big smiles from both sides throughout the 30 minute presentation.
One of my most special experiences from the trip was seeing your generosity get passed on to a worthy cause. When we asked you to “give us the shirts off of your backs,” we certainly weren’t expecting the 12 huge boxes of clothes but we were elated. We were able to bring almost all of the clothes in our checked baggage for a nominal fee, but we couldn’t get them all to Africa…
Stay tuned until next week to hear where the rest of your shirts ended up!!!
