UMYF San Marcos Service and Recreation Trip

UMYF

July 12-14, nine Chapel Hill youth and three adults traveled to San Marcos, TX in the church van. On Friday evening, we visited Southside Community Center, where the youth served up heaping plates of hot food for hungry folks at this shelter. They also washed dishes, distributed donated toiletry items, greeted at the door, and cleaned up after the meal service. Later, they did some shopping and returned to bless the shelter with extra plates, forks, and dishwasher soap!

Please pray for Deidre, who does the cooking every day and often does not have enough volunteers for serving and does the clean up all by herself. She has a servant’s heart and runs this wonderful little haven where the homeless, or families who’ve hit a rough patch, can get a hot meal, ice for their water bottles, do a load of laundry, or even spend the night.

On Saturday, we visited a Senior Center in the same neighborhood. There was an entire room full of folks waiting for the youth when we arrived! They were overjoyed to participate in many rounds of Bingo led by the kids. In between rounds of Bingo, Heidi would read a question out loud, and then the Seniors and the Youth had fun discussions at the Bingo tables. Questions like, “Describe the neighborhood you grew up in”. This was a great way to make new friends and turned out to be very meaningful for all. Please pray for Beatrice and Danny whose hearts are constantly burdened with the great needs of their little community of low income seniors. CHUMC youth plan to stay connected with our new friends there and will reach out to them from time to time. On Sunday, the youth enjoyed tubing down the San Marcos River. They spent a couple of hours making repeat trips over the set of falls at the end. Their goal was to hang on to each other’s tubes to keep a “train” intact the whole time. Finally, on about the 15th time, they succeeded and they were thrilled! A better team building activity could not have been planned. It just happened, and it was a wonderful thing to behold!

Everything along the way went perfectly, smoothly, and the kids had excellent behavior! Thank you for your prayers and support always.

Heartfelt thanks to Angela Romine and Dawn Self for driving and chaperoning!
