April 2015 is National Autism Awareness Month

You may be wandering about the word “autism.” For many years the word “autism” seemed to be such a mysterious word. Maybe, that is one of the reasons puzzle pieces that are not fitting together is the symbol for autism and autism spectrum disorder, and why Autism Awareness Month is so important.

“Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) possess a wide variety of skills, strengths, interests and needs. Many educational programs for children on the autism spectrum focus on building independence through goal setting the areas of speech and communication, problem solving, functional living skills, and academic content areas such as math and reading.” (from Lakeshore Learning)

As a parent and educator, to me, this seems like a description of all God’s children, not just those with characteristics of the Autism Spectrum Disorder. All God’s children are precious and especially special to Him. They are precious and special to their families and friends.

Children with Autism have always had a special place in my heart and life. The Autism Society has been observing National Autism Awareness Month since the 1970s.

“The United States recognizes April as a special opportunity to educate the public about autism and issues with the autism community. The Autism Society improves the lives of all affected by autism through education, advocacy, services, research, and support.” (from the Autism Society website)

One characteristic of autism can be seen when a toddler shows expressive and receptive communication and social difficulties. I encourage you to visit the Autism Society’s website and the website for Autism Speaks where you’ll learn more about the puzzle that is the world of autism.

I wish above all things that you may know how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ for you.
