February 3, 2015: Holy Conversations Update

We hope you got a chance to read the article in the newsletter last week, which summarized the meeting we had with John Thornburg on Sunday, January 25, 2015. Here are a new thing or two for us to work on this week and next.

First, we now have a team email, to let you participate more fully in the next steps. Email holyconversations@chapelhillumc.org when you want to ask questions or to share ideas.

As we went over in the meeting and the many stories you’ve shared, some of them suggest that fear of the future and hopefulness in what God may be doing are walking along side-by-side for the people of our congregation.

The next questions to consider in order to help us interpret our stories are these:

  1. What are the memories the congregation is clinging to, both pleasant memories as well as those that are not so pleasant?
  2. What are the values that we, as a congregation, want to carry forward in this planning process?
  3. How do we define our mission field?

The last question needs some explanation. Mission field may mean a particular group of people, or a particular geographic area that God is calling us to serve. It is an important question because in order to decide what DIFFERENCE God is calling us to make, we need to identify the “to whom” question.

Sunday schoolteachers and group leaders, please continue to hold these conversations amongst your groups. Chapel Hill, as always, please keep our church and our work of discernment for the Holy Conversations team in your prayers.

We are also pleased to announce that John Thornburg will be here to deliver the message on Sunday, February 15, 2015.
