Pastor’s Message: Oct. 11th, 2021

CHUMC Family,

Charge conference is just around the corner. We will meet in our Chapel Hill UMC Sanctuary at 7 pm on Monday, October 18. This will be an excellent opportunity to be introduced to our new District Superintendent Rev. Edlen Cowley.

It will also be an opportunity to complete our work regarding the transition to a single board model of local church structure. We are thankful for the collective work of the CHUMC family as some have attended a workshop, others gathered information, and others presented in and attended all church meetings.

With all this in mind, we want to be sure to clear up any remaining confusion. Adoption of the single board model very simply means the administrative work of the church is condensed from four boards (Church Council, Trustees, SPRC, and Finance) to one. This streamlines the church administrative structure for more efficient decision making and right sizes the administrative structure of the church to more properly fit a church our size. I means a church can operate with fewer meetings and without people serving on multiple committees so there is more time for vital ministry and fellowship while allowing churches to pivot more quickly to adapt to their rapidly changing contexts in the missional era we live in.

However, this does not mean that the ministry teams you are serving on now are going away. Ministry teams like Worship, Nurture, Mission & Outreach, etc., remain as important parts of what we do as a church. Those will continue as long as they have viable interest and serve the mission and vision of our local United Methodist church (discipleship), though such evaluation does and should occur whether you have a multi-board or single-board structure. On the other hand, the teams we have now seem to serve rather essential functions that need to be served in just about any local church.

So I hope you will attend on Monday, October 18 and join us as we greet our new district superintendent and move toward this transition to a single board.

Grace and peace,

Rev. J.D. Allen
